Domestic and family violence is a devastating problem that affects the health and wellbeing of West Australians every year. Large numbers of women and children suffer daily as a result of domestic and family violence.

FACTS:
It is also generally agreed that:
- In 2009 it was estimated that violence against women and their children cost the Australian economy $13.6billion (FaHCSIA, 2009).
- In Australia, one in three women experience physical violence and one in
five women experience sexual violence in their lifetime (ABS, 2006).
- Domestic violence is the biggest health risk to women in Australia (United Nations, 2005).
- In Western Australia between the 1st of July 2009 and the 30th June 2010 Police attended 34,085 domestic and family violence incidents.
- In the same period there were 16 deaths as a result of domestic and family violence.
- 70% of young people between the ages of 12 and 20 will experience a romantic relationship, one in three of these are violent (Indermaur, 2001).
It is also generally agreed that:
- Domestic and family violence is largely unreported;
- An overwhelming majority of people who experience domestic and family violence are women; and
- Aboriginal women are more likely than non Aboriginal women to be victims of violence.
