BE SAFE IN PUBLIC

It is your right to feel safe when you are out and about. These are some of the steps you can take to make sure you are safe in public:

Remain alert and aware of your surroundings, remain in well lit and populated areas where possible.
Let trusted people at your work, children's school or childcare know about your safety concerns.
Keep your hands free of bags and other items when shopping and if possible keep your keys in your hand. This will ensure you are able to get into your house or car quickly and they can also be a useful weapon if necissary.
Change your routines such as when and where you shop, where you park at work etc.
Check the backseat of your car, making sure no one is hiding there and when in your car keep the doors locked.
Keep your mobile phone charged and with you at all times, it can always be used to call 000 even when it has no credit.
Obtain a Violence Restraining Order and keep a copy with you at all times to show to the Police.
Talk to your children about their safety and make sure they know how to make a collect call if they are in need of help.
Police, security personnel, train guards etc. are able to help you if you feel threatened.
